Behind the Scenes Blues

This month we go on location for a quick snap shot of local publication Y.A.M. at work in studio VIC42 with a custom couture piece from my collection #ss2016 Teresa Lindsay Couture. The design is a #geofashion dress done in soft cotton jersey with an 80’s angled pattern in blacks and royal blue. This creation came at the request of fashion stylist, Janine Metcalfe for a distinct series on a spread titled “Moody Blues.”

Special thanks to photographer Jeffery Bosdet, model Katie Keough, and make-up by Melodie Reynolds of Elate Cosmetics.

Fashion Styling on Set

Two weeks behind the scenes with Epicure on location!
With my regular full schedule I had the additional opportunity this past few days to coordinate fashion on this brilliant production by OneNet Marketing. It was truly rewarding. It’s one of those experiences where the people and professionals involved really make the whole thing twice as rich. There was an incredible team behind this project and vision from Epicure (the client) that was truly inspiring! Beautiful farm shots, golden hour at the beach, and two days at two stunning homes with white rooms and pristine views. Magic!

At the start of summer the wardrobe options on location were blissfully staged for indoor dinner cooking, bbq outdoors, business meetings and strolls on the beach. With incredible weather it made everything easier for getting to and from with full racks of clothing!

Working from mood boards and scene sketches helps us decide on the looks and then allocate the models, roles, sizes and scenes all together on a styling board.

Once we have a theme and the models in mind for each scene (and know who is with who as to not clash with colours and style the wardrobe to work together), we can then go sourcing!

To through in some helpful advise on fashion, I want to share that if people become familiar with cut and with fabrics it gets easier to determine how something will look – rather than just “off the rack.” Here are a few examples of what items looked like before someone tried them on. Then you can see for yourself just how amazing the difference is when there is a body in the clothing.

Exclusivity Rises Up

With the recent pulling of big box retailers out of Canada comes further confirmation that bigger is not better and that mass production is harmful to the local based economies of the world. It also opens up the conversation about a new direction that I have seen coming for a long time – that is, people want to go back to what is original, unique, or  exclusive, even custom. The bulk-buy mentality limited quality and has made everyone appear to dress the same – many of us in black outer wear or dark colours to almost neutralize our image. Variety but on higher level of quality will produce originality in what we put on (wear), the styles, the colours, and how unique it is to our personal path of discovery. For example, finding items when we travel, or meet a local fashion designer.

Solopreneurship has been on the rise also and contributed to this movement toward exclusivity and quality products and services. This has increased also with more women developing their own ideas into popular businesses and connecting within their communities. In our generation we are also seeing more support for this by their male partners and it has been transforming the shift and access to both men and women making these ideas and dreams come to fruition. Examples would be new organic perfumes, handmade clothing by local women & men or groups, original jewelry and locally grown herbs into teas – all becoming ways to get something unique to share and build community. Creation and necessity are the mother of invention and new inventors and creators are born everyday – it’s inspiring to say the least!
